Jump to the latest reply, and no more jumps to the top

· Sketchbook changelog

The Claude chat gets a round button that takes you straight to the newest reply, with a count of what came in while you were reading further up. And the chat no longer throws you back to the start of the conversation.

The request, late on 17 October: “the app needs a drop button to drop the Claude code chat down to the last reply, it seems to glitch to the top of the conversation sometimes”. Two things, then: a way down, and a fix for the jump. Both are in this release, on the web, the tablet and the phone.

Jump to latest reply

When you scroll up in a chat to read something earlier, a round button with a down arrow appears in the bottom corner. Tap it and the chat goes to the last reply. If new messages arrived while you were up there, a small number on the button says how many. Tool steps, the one-line “Read this file” entries, are not counted, only messages. When you are already at the end the button is not there at all. Screen readers announce it as “Jump to latest reply”.

Why it jumped to the top

The chat receives the newest few hundred items of the conversation each time something changes, as one complete list. Sometimes that list is briefly empty, for example when a conversation has just been cleared and the new one has nothing written yet. When the full list came back, the phone and tablet put the reader at the very first item and then checked whether they were “near the end”. They were not, so the chat never went back down. A test now reproduces exactly that, and fails on the previous version.

Two smaller faults turned up on the way. Each row was named partly by its position in the list, so when the oldest item dropped off the top every row changed name at once and a reader who had scrolled up was nudged by one message. On the web, the chat decided whether to follow from a fixed margin at the moment it redrew, so when Claude’s question menu or the keyboard took up room at the bottom, it stopped following even though nobody had scrolled.

How it follows now

Not yet

Very long conversations still take a while to show the first time a chat is opened. That is a separate, older matter and is untouched here. The button was checked on a phone emulator and in a web browser against the live notebook; it has not been tried on a real phone or tablet yet.
