Five tools: Print, Reminders, Drop, Calculators and Service status
Print a page on a real printer at the right paper size, manage phone reminders, share a file with a link, work out engineering numbers from cited sources, and see at a glance whether everything is answering.
On 13 October the answer to a list of five suggested tools was “1-5 then”. 1.4.6 adds all five to the Tools page, on the web, the tablet and the phone.
Print a notebook page, or a PDF or picture on it, straight to one of the printers on the network. Each printer shows whether it is ready, printing, or needs attention, and when a printer itself reports a problem, such as being out of paper, it shows amber rather than green and is not offered as the default. Recent jobs are listed and can be cancelled.
Paper sizes are taken from what each printer is set up to take. A page prints on A4 landscape by default and a customer drawing on A3, and US Letter is never offered. If you ask a printer for a size it cannot take, nothing is shrunk quietly: you get a sentence saying which sizes it does take, and nothing is printed. A page prints as a clean, light sheet set in Inter and JetBrains Mono, without the app around it. Print is also in every page’s menu and beside each printable file.
Reminders
See, add, reschedule, snooze and delete the reminders that go to the phone. A reminder that comes from a dated checkbox on a page is shown too, but it is changed on its page, because the page is where it lives. Times in the past are refused with a plain sentence.
Drop
Upload a file to the short-lived file-share page and get a link to hand to someone, from the Tools page or from beside any file on a notes page. Recent uploads are listed with their links.
Calculators
Engineering calculators for everyday workshop and site questions:
- Units, including the metric prefixes.
- Ohm’s law and power, for direct current and single-phase circuits.
- Motor current and speed: full-load current from power, voltage, power factor and efficiency; synchronous speed, slip, and the frequency for a target speed.
- Cable voltage drop, in volts and as a percentage of the supply, against the usual 5 percent limit.
- Threads and tap drills for metric coarse, UNC and UNF threads, plus any unified thread you describe.
Every figure in the data comes from a source that is cited in the app: a national measurement institute’s guide to units, a cable maker’s handbook, tap and thread makers’ guides, and a motor maker’s specification guide. Where the obvious source is a paid standard that is not reproduced anywhere, the app does not pretend to quote it: the cable figures are labelled honestly as coming from the cable maker’s own tables. Where two sources disagree on a thread size, both are shown, with a note.
Service status
One screen that says whether Sketchbook and the things it depends on are answering: the file-share page, narration, mail, the accounts, the alert channel, reminders and the two printers, each with a plain-English line.
The journal is never part of it
The journal is never printed, never uploaded to the file-share page, never put in a reminder and never shown in status. The server refuses, whoever asks, Claude included, with a sentence that says so.
